Odessa is a city in southern Ukraine which has around 1,000,000 inhabitants. During the communist period it was the most important trading port in the Soviet Union and a Soviet naval base. This important port city with access to the Black Sea has a large and diversified public transport network, composed of trams, trolleybuses, buses and taxis. In this city lived an important Jewish community that left its mark on the local culture and architecture. In Odessa are a large number of museums, theatres, including the opera house and ballet theatre, dating from 1809, an important cultural center, also recognized internationally.
